(NOT) Scary Food Allergy Halloween – Parties

School parties or friends’ parties let’s be safe!

As a former school room-parent, we started planning school events about 3-4 weeks ahead of the event. Now is the time to speak with your school food allergy representatives, nurse and teachers. While there may not be official parties, school/sports/clubs usually incorporate some Halloween treats or crafts. Therefore, it is always safest to double-check arts & crafts, food treats and after school activities.

If you are having a school or at-home party, here’s some #foodallergyfriendly ideas!

  1. Know what food allergies attendees have. Are their allergies airborne, touch or ingestion?
  2. Have extra food allergy knowledgeable helpers. Many food allergy parents volunteer as they really know their child’s specific food allergies and symptoms to look out for in others.
  3. Offer to bring food allergy safe treats (see our suggestions).

Food Allergy Friendly Treats to Make

YUMMY! Food allergy friendly foods can be delicious and safe. Also, a really fun family activity!

Our award-winning allergy friendly chocolate cake can be made into cupcakes or mini cupcakes too. Make ahead and freeze these cupcakes/cake so that you can relax & enjoy Halloween. So much fun to decorate together! This may become a family tradition.

Another option is a #foodallergy safe cake mix. We like Better Batter brand. It’s #glutenfree & free from Top 10 #foodallergens & delicious! Also, @Namastefoods is a scrumptious allergy-friendly vanilla cake mix. Simple Mills, Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 #glutenfree flour is great for using in recipes, and we love @KIngArthurBaking

Another yummy idea: make Rice Krispie Treats! Always double-check ingredients, especially sprinkles, candies and chocolates.

See, a (NOT) Scary Food Allergy Halloween can be easy and LOTS of fun.

Food Allergy Friendly Treats to Buy

Food Allergy Friendly Treats to buy: some suggestions on our Amazon Food Allergy Halloween list.

Additionally, we’ve included on our Halloween Amazon list above some suggestions for Halloween costumes that come with gloves as some people have touch allergies (us!). Because the light-up gloves (on our list) are SO super cool, think kids will want to wear them!

Also, we put up a Food Allergy sign (get yours by leaving a comment!) at the beginning of our driveway. This let’s both parents and kids know we are a Food Allergy friendly home. Every year we hear kids excitedly pointing to our signs! It is a treat & truly priceless.

In addition to some #foodallergyfriendly treats we also offer non-food items like mini squish animals and light-up bracelets.

A few of our favorite brands: @allergysmart cookies, Made Good, Divvies & YumEarth.

A fun & safe (NOT) Scary Food Allergy Halloween!

Tips for Easier Food Allergy Halloween

After 2 decades of being a food allergy family, here are some of our top tips.

Please let us know your tips in the comments. 🙂

  1. Always plan ahead your #foodallergy safe meals on Halloween and day after. Everyone is less likely to make a bad or “hangry” decision if already well-nourished with safe food.
  2. Be extra vigilant with lunch at school for a few days after Halloween. Many treats are either packed in lunches or brought to be eaten at school/sports/aftercare.
  3. Read EVERY label EVERY time. Some snack-size candies may be made in different manufacturing facilities than their regular sized counterparts.
  4. Go over labels with your family, highlighting any not so common variations of your food allergens.
  5. For kids away at college, send a care package with their favorite safe snacks – they will be very appreciative!
  6. If trick-or-treating, carry some allergy safe treats with you. Never open any candy until a parent has gone thru.
  7. Make it fun! For every candy that your child cannot have, allow them to trade for a food allergy friendly treat or a mini-Lego, Hot wheels cars or small squish-mellows. Families can donate the not safe candy to local charities (make sure it is ok 1st).

(NOT) Scary Food Allergy Halloween, right?! Hope you have a Spooktacular Halloween!
