As always, all info provided here & on all our sites is based on our experiences with food allergies/asthma & should not be construed as medical advice. Seek your doctor for questions for your specific food allergies/medical recommendations.
As we have multiple, anaphylactic food allergies, understanding the different Caribbean Islands cultures, foods and hospitals/health care is super important to our family. Especially helpful to be able to have some food allergy friendly restaurants for us to be able to eat out safely too.
Tips for Traveling to the Caribbean with Food Allergies
Did you know the 28 Caribbean Islands cover over 1 million square miles?
Since the Caribbean Islands have many distinct cuisines based on their historical founding. From Spanish Creole to French and Dutch, the Caribbean Islands are as flavorful as they are different.
As people living with food allergies, we highly suggest bringing your own mask, snorkel and reef safe/allergy safe sunscreen. And your backpack cooler bag. Seriously.
🚑 Always carry 2 Epi-pens/allergy medications in insulated bag as Caribbean can be hot. We use & recommend: Allermates & Prac Medic Bags.

If you are American, really good chance your US-healthcare/insurance will not work internationally in Caribbean except possibly in the US Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico (both US Territories).
Therefore, we personally use, recommend & are affiliates for both World Nomads & TravelGuard.
And yes, you absolutely NEED health insurance.
Other option if you needed healthcare in the Caribbean, is to pay in cash or by credit card. Want to know how much that’s going to cost you?

Note: As always, you must vet for your specific #foodallergies as everyone has different dietary requirements & things can change. If you have concerns, don’t eat there.

Turks & Caicos Islands – Crystal Clear Turquoise Water
Love, Love, Love the Turks & Caicos Islands! As we have been traveling to Turks & Caicos islands since 1997 & with the kids since 2004, many, many times with both kids having multiple anaphylactic food allergies. The Turks & Caicos Islands are:
Crystalline turquoise waters and white sand beaches are trademarks to the over forty islands and cays that make up the ‘Beautiful by Nature’ TCI. Considered the World’s best kept secret, the TCI are an easy escape – with an ease of connectivity from Miami, New York, Toronto or London…Quote from the official T & C tourist website.
Eating out with Food Allergies on Turks & Caicos
🍋 Some suggestions but you must still vet for your specific food allergies as everyone has different dietary needs & things can change:
Both a resort to stay at, Ocean Club & Ocean Club West do not disappoint! As beautiful resorts, they have multiple, delicious restaurants on site.
🏄♀️ And take it from one of our Food Allergy Travels and Life (Join our Private FB Group Us here!)
Group member Jessica C.’s recent vacation where their family was able to eat out at the Ocean Club Resorts – even dessert!
Yes, with food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. 🥜 🏴☠️
Jessica C said:
Ocean Club West on Providenciales in Turks. Low key, small resort on Grace Bay. We found Turks very easy to navigate with our twin sons’ peanut and tree nut allergies. And this resort in condo style so every unit has a full kitchen and an IGA grocery store nearby. We went anticipating needing to shop and cook at least some of the time and instead, ate out every meal. It was better than at home.

Best Caribbean Islands to Visit with Food Allergies – US Virgin Islands
🏖️ No surprise here, we always recommend the US Virgin Islands! After many trips to the islands of St. Thomas & St. Johns, this is a super fun & easy vacation!
🌟 If you have been following us on our Instagram Cindi — Food Allergy Mama & Travel Expert! (@aneasyjourney) • Instagram photos and videosyou most likely have seen our trips to the #USVI.
Many non-stop flights into St. Thomas from all around USA & Canada.
Then take a car service, taxi or rent a car and head to Eastern side of island. Our favorite resorts, condo rentals thru AirBnB & VRBO or the ferry to St John’s (can also get ferry close to airport).
Some suggestions for #eatingout in USVI:
We were able to eat out with food allergies on both St. Thomas & St. John, #USVI at many restaurants including:
- Ritz Carlton St. Thomas
- Frenchmen’s Cove Marriott
- Sudi’s Caribbean Bar & Grill at Sapphire Beach resort. Fish tacos, homemade pizza & fresh salads are delicious!
🥂 Live music, on beach next to the ferry – SO much fun!! As always, suggest you contact in advance about your #foodallergies & arrive at a less busy time:
- Beach Bar St. John’s
- High-Tide Beach Bar & seafood Restaurant – next door to Beach Bar St. Johns, fantastic #foodallergyaware but note obviously has seafood. We have been able to eat here with our specific food allergies for many years.
Medical in USVI
The USVI are US territories, so many US based health care insurance works here. But always check in advance for your situation or purchase travel insurance that includes medical. After assisting hundreds of clients with trip planning, you NEED medical insurance wherever you travel. Therefore, we personally use, recommend & are affiliates for both World Nomads & TravelGuard.
As a matter of fact, we have personally used the medical facilities in St. Thomasfor our daughter’s asthma. For medical information across all US Virgin Islands see: medical in USVI.
