Food Allergy Force: Awareness to Action

Food Allergy Force: Awareness to Action

Food Allergy Force: Awareness to Action!

33 million Strong. 1 Mission: Safety, Inclusion, Respect.

Food Allergies aren’t a niche issue – they’re a world-wide reality!

1 in 13 kids in the USA has a food allergy; 1 in 10 adults also have food allergies.

☠️ That’s 33 million reasons for companies, restaurants, entertainment to take notice.

And if you add in food intolerances, our number grows to 85 million Americans. That’s without considering most people eat out/travel with on average 2 other people.

Now we are 255 million people.

Want our business? Earn our trust.

Want our viewership? Reflect our Food Allergy reality.

Want to hear about a day in the life of a person with Food Allergies?

Food Allergies can be deadly & certainly not a laughing matter.

Food Allergies: A Day in the Life

My heart honestly stopped…we had been traveling back home from a trip to Florida to see family when I noticed my daughter’s arm was rapidly having welts appear…in a matter of a few minutes, my healthy teenage daughter was now coughing & having an anaphylactic reaction…

I quickly maneuvered onto the side of the interstate while calling 911 from my cell phone.

Telling myself to “stay calm, follow our allergy plan…deep breathes” …

My 12-year-old son is calling from the back seat, “Mom, you have to give Katie the Epi-pen!!”

Grabbing the Epi-pen & still speaking to the 911 dispatcher, time seemed to move very, very slowly, like I was dreaming.

But hearing sirens, I looked up & a SC state trooper had heard my 911 call & in the middle of a rainstorm, drove down the exit ramp the wrong way, to help us.

Thankfully, my mom was with us, and she accompanied Katie in the ambulance while we followed, not knowing the area,

To say it was very, very frightening is an understatement.

SNL Skit is Not a Laughing Matter

To anyone who laughed at the recent SNL skit on “Wanting to have a Food Allergy so that you can pre-board” an airplane, I want to tell you how sad I feel for you.

How I hope you or your loved ones never develop a food allergy.

You see, this has been our lives since my daughter Katie was 1st diagnosed at 15-months old.

Life threatening, death as a real possibility, Food Allergies.

Add in my daughter’s asthma & she is statistically in the Danger Zone – the people who can seriously die from inadvertently eating, touching or ingesting a single bite of food.

See, for us, peanuts are our Kryptonite.

Also, shellfish & legumes.

Katie didn’t eat something that had peanuts in it, she simply walked into a gas station to use the restroom & the boiled peanuts caused her anaphylactic allergic reaction.

Back to school with Food Allergies.
Not only at lunchtime are food allergies present. Art, music, PE are also times when food allergens are present. See how Food Allergies impact our everyday life?

Fighting for Your Life

Watching my teenage daughter fight for her life was devastating.

Thank God, she recovered.

But not everyone is so fortunate.

Do you remember that 1 in 10 American adults has a food allergy?

Or that 1 in 13 kids has a food allergy?

We are not a small group & our numbers are growing, unfortunately.

Flying with Food Allergies can be challenging, especially when missing a flight connection.
No Joke: 35,000 feet in the air is frightening for many of us with life-threatening Food Allergies.

SO, for anyone thinking that “we want to have a food allergy so that we can pre-board an airplane” as the SNL show said…is simply insensitive, uniformed & ignorant.

Realities of Living with a Food Allergy

Every week it seems, I hear about someone who dies from an anaphylactic food allergy reaction.
