We thought that the River Cruise was the end…then comes the incredible Monaco & Provence, France!
Our Food Allergy Adventure Continues
We stepped off the Viking River Cruise thinking our adventure was winding down but instead, it’s opening up a whole new chapter!
Monaco dazzles us with its beauty & luxury (wait to you see all the sports cars!) but could it handle all of our anaphylactic food allergies?
Provence offers us incredibly fragrant lavender fields & incredibly charming villages, but could these adorable cafes & restaurants really accommodate us with our many food allergies without any cross contamination?
Our family lives with peanut, tree nut, shellfish, legumes. soy anaphylactic food allergies and now also dairy & meat intolerances for over 20 years.
And every trip is truly a balancing act between our safety and living a normal life.

This post-cruise journey through the French Riviera & sun-soaked countryside is testing all we know about food allergy advocacy.
And trusting in communication across different languages as well as true, deep food allergy understanding.
From a priceless lunch overlooking the beach to small town restaurants that took the time to make us allergy-safe meals, this part of our vacation reminds us why we keep exploring the world & why we share.

On Our Own in Provence & Monaco with Food Allergies – Trip Plan
Onto longtime travel favorites. Lavender & Luxury: South of France and Monaco with Food Allergies!
We are staying in Provence for 2 nights at the Michelin star Domain de Manville (very #foodallergyfriendly).
As well as 2 nights in Nice, very close to Monaco in a VRBO.
As with all cruise lines, Viking does offer pre & post cruise extensions.
However, this trip, we opted for our own Paris pre-cruise & Nice/Monaco post-cruise on our own.
In Paris, we love the Hotel Keppler & in Nice, a fantastic VRBO overlooking the beautiful Mediterranean Sea! (Our travel agency clients love this apartment too.)
This allows us to visit local markets & pick up the most delicious foods that are easily prepared in our kitchen.
As I do know how incredibly challenging cooking for us can be! And it is comforting knowing all the ingredients and cooking/preparation of some of our meals.
I love to cook. And we share many of our world recipes here on the blog to show how easy it is to cook with food allergies.
Domain de Manville – Food Allergy Heaven
We Know travelling with food allergies in the South of France & Monaco will require some extra prep – especially after the structured comfort on our Viking River cruise, so we planned ahead.
Reaching out to the concierge at the Domaine de Manville & explaining our dietary requirements weeks before our arrival.
And once we arrived by car from Avignon, the estate of the Domain de Manville emerges from the shadows of the Alpilles Mountains in Les Baux.
“A Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the Domaine de Manville offers a sun-drenched spa, fitness room, and outdoor pool. Dine on exquisite Provençal cuisine in the Bistrot or gourmet restaurant. Enjoy a light lunch in the shaded courtyard before exploring the estate…” we quickly went to speak with the chef and manager.
Food Allergy Meals & Michelin Stars
What happened next was nothing short of Heaven!
The Chef, Lieven Van Aken “invents food pairings that honors the freshness of the food…to leave a trace of an astounding and generous dish.”
Along with his staff, Chef Van Aken creates the most delicious & food allergy-friendly meals!
Every bite from our afternoon snack of grapes, aged French cheeses (we can do cheese) with a well-matched French red wine to our dinner of pan-seared trout with roasted vegetables & herbs was scrumptious!
And our dessert!!
Fresh strawberries, perfectly ripe & naturally sweet – served with a delicate drizzle of aged Balsamic vinegar.
That’s it.
No complicated sauces to 2nd guess. No hidden ingredients to worry about, just pure melt-in-your-mouth goodness!
Theses strawberries are the most scrumptious berries I have ever eaten.
Truly, one of the moments that makes me stop, take a few deep breaths & think:

Late Spring/ early Summer’s lavender fields are exactly the gorgeousness you see in movies & photographs & every corner is luxurious!
It is going to be difficult to leave such a magical place – with flowers in every window box & sunshine its own color!

During Summer, there’s a fantastic mini-bus tour from Les Baux to the lavender fields & museum.
Food Allergy-Friendly Breakfast
And after such amazing meals yesterday, this morning’s breakfast is again unbelievable!
The glass domed Garden is a large buffet with #glutenfree and #dairyfree croissants, breads, yoghurt, fresh fruit & more.
This is probably the 1st buffet we have ever felt safe eating!
Although, they very kindly asked if we would like a freshly prepared breakfast.
As the risk of cross contamination is high, this is actually what we did.
Leaving Domain de Manville is truly sad…but we will return!
Monaco Here we Come!

So, this is how we easily travelled from Les Baux to Monaco!
Arriving at our Mediterranean Sea view condo, we eagerly head for the Monaco markets!
One of our favorite ways to immerse ourselves in the local culture – while staying safe with our food allergies is visiting the local markets to pick up fresh, seasonal ingredients.
With just a few, in season ingredients like ripe tomatoes, olives & local olive oil, it’s super fun & fast, to whip up a salad, make a Provencal topping for fish or chicken & be able to safely accommodate for all of our anaphylactic food allergies.
Traveling with food allergies doesn’t mean missing out. In fact, shopping gives us control over every ingredient, let’s us shop with the locals & enjoy authentic Provence flavors!

Monaco’s Must Sees
Monaco may be small, but it has abundant natural beauty, history & of course, glamour!
As this trip has us in Monaco for only 2 full days, here’s what we saw & ate with food allergies:
- Prince’s Palace (Palais Princier) – See the gorgeous Palace with incredible frescos, lavish rooms & the daily changing of the guard! You need tickets.
- Casino de Monte Carlo – Even if you don’t gamble, this is stunningly lavish architecture – Travel tip: Bring your passport! Tours daily from 10 – 1 pm. After 2 pm, strictly over 18 years old.
- Larvotto Beach – public Beach & great food allergy friendly restaurants! We ate a delicious lunch here of Caprese salad, fresh pasta, bronzini fish & watermelon.
- Princess Grace Rose Garden – 4,000 gorgeous roses make up this tribute to Monaco’s beloved Princess Grace
After our touring, we headed back to the condo & it’s incredible view, for a glass of wine overlooking the Sea!
Our last night’s dinner is our homemade Nicoise Salad with salmon.
Since we leave for Nice airport super early tomorrow morning, our plan is to take our quiche & berries with us on the plane for our breakfast.
As this is a connecting flight into Paris, there’s no issue with food brought in our backpack cooler.
Then for our international flight back to the USA, we have made our famous no mayo pasta salad & snacks of our favorite Rustica potato chips!
Be aware of foods when traveling internationally – there are a lot of restrictions especially with fruits, veggies, pork products & even soft cheeses.
From the lavender fields of Provence to the glamour of Monaco, this trip reminds us that with the right prep, travelling with food allergies can be amazing, delicious & filled with UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES!
