Sweet Sensations: Food Allergy-Friendly Cakes
Sweet Sensations: Food Allergy-Friendly Cakes to make for all occasions, from Wedding or Baby Showers to Birthday Bashes and Special Celebrations.
So, so easy to make and adaptable for almost all food allergies. Cause there’s LOTS of occasions which call for CAKE!
Showers of Happiness
My lovely niece Janine and her handsome fiancé Alex had invited us to their Engagement Party a few months ago. As they both are wonderful chefs, I was truly honored that they would allow me to make this very special cake for them.
Perhaps it is because my daughter (the bride-to-be’s cousin) has multiple anaphylactic food allergies, and this would allow everyone to be able to eat the same dessert. Which is a really big deal to all of us living with food allergies. Especially at a Wedding or Shower or Birthday Party, it is extremely rare to be able to have the cake due to our food allergies.
Not only did I want to make a beautiful Wedding Shower cake, but it had to be absolutely scrumptious!
Make a Delicious Masterpiece
Because every Celebration is unique, you can easily adjust for your party size. Wilton, makers of fantastic cake pans, has figured out cake sizes by number of people/cakes slice size, see: Cake Size.
If you are making for just a family or a few friends or want totally homemade, see our Award-Winning Chocolate Cake Recipe. Of course, this recipe makes YUMMY cupcakes too!
Feel free to substitute for your specific food allergies and tastes. Also, in the USA, alcohol manufacturers do NOT need to label for food allergens. We always email companies to mitigate any lost in translation issues. For our specific food allergies, we can safely use Grand Marnier – a deliciously orange citrus flavor that is our Top Secret. SSHHH!
We add a tablespoon of Grand Marnier into our cake batter, as the alcohol cooks out while baking. Of course, if the cake is for adults only, we also add another tablespoon to our Butter Cream Frosting Recipe too. I can’t tell you how many people have asked us what is in our cakes they are that AMAZING. Even chefs. Really.
And I don’t tell too many people, just us! 🙂
Sweet Sensations: Food Allergy-Friendly Cakes for all occasions
There are so many opportunities to get-together with family and friends all year long, it’s a really good idea to have a Food Allergy-Friendly Party Plan. Here’s ours: Food Allergy-friendly Party Plan.
Over the years, we’ve made Food Allergy-Friendly wedding cakes, shower cakes, birthday cakes, school fundraiser cakes, cupcakes and more! And you can too. This is easier than you think. I know, in the beginning it can scary, but you’ve got this!
My niece Julia said that her sister’s shower cake was so delicious she would pay for it. Many people at my niece’s wedding shower had thought our cake was bought at a bakery. And a fellow guest who also has peanut and nut allergies, was ecstatic that he too could eat the cake!
At first, he didn’t believe us but after about 3 minutes of food allergy discussion, he grabbed a huge piece of cake. And he had seconds. Needless to say, we sent him home with some cake. He said it was the very best cake he had ever eaten. We believe him!
Full disclosure: we tested out A LOT of food allergy-friendly cake mixes & we paid for them all. I know, I know, someone had to do it. You’re welcome. Our favorite was Pennsylvania’s @BetterBatterFlour – SO GOOD! when we contacted them to let them know they had won our taste test, they graciously shipped us 8 boxes! Thank you so much.

Sweet Celebrations: Food Allergy-Friendly Cakes
Food Allergy-friendly Cake recipes for Showers, Weddings, Birthday Parties & More! Easy to make, even more delicious to eat! So, let Them Eat Cake - Food Allergy-friendly, of course.
Servings: 30 people
Ingredients
- 1 box Better Batter Cake Mix Vanilla or Chocolate
- 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Cup Oil
- 3 Eggs Eggs *Vegan instructions on box.
- 1 TBSP Grand Marnier Optional
Buttercream Frosting
- 1 Cup Earth Balance Butter substitute or Butter
- 3 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract
- 1 TBSP Grand Marnier or another allergy-friendly extract Optional
Instructions
- Prepare Cake according to package directions, adding in vanilla extract & Grand Marnier per box of cake mix.
- Use 2 boxes of Cake Mix per 12" cake pan, making sure to fill only 2/3 full.
- Bake until a toothpick comes out clean. This will be longer time than box shows as you're doubling recipe.
- Allow cake to cool on wire rack for 10 minutes, then turn onto wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting
- To make an allergy-friendly buttercream frosting, use dairy-free butter substitute like Earth Balance. Allow butter to come to room temperature 1 hour. For a large shower/wedding cake, I tripled this recipe.
- In stand mixer, add butter substitute/butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and Grand Marnier into mixing bowl, on low setting, until smooth, about 3-5 minutes.
- When assembling cake, add a dollop of the buttercream 1st onto the cake platter, then add 1st layer of cake. this is essential as it acts like a glue - keeping the cake from moving.
- For a more custom cake, use a small jar of raspberry or strawberry jam mixed with a tablespoon of Grand Marnier as middle layer cake filling.
- Then top with next layer of cake.
- Repeat again, so have 2 layers of cake with 2 layers of jam filling. Add the 3rd cake layer and frost top and sides with the Buttercream frosting.
- Decorate as you'd like - paper or fresh flowers, cake topper or something special for the person/couple. Have fun with this!
