Getaways to Fall For – Fall Travel

Antibes, France

Getaways for Fall for that are easy, fun and affordable! Autumn is the perfect time to take a holiday.

***Updated October 25, 2021***

Because the temperature cools off, crowds thin and prices drop. And it’s wine 🍷 harvest time! So, for those who have lots of vacation days or only a few, 5 places for a Fall trip. But don’t say that I didn’t caution you. All are spectacular and will leave you wanting to stay longer…or go back for more!

If you are in the UK or the USA, these Fall getaways are mapped out below. So all you need to do is book! 🙂

Italy’s San Gimignano – Towers and Treasure

The Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano is a romantic or wine-lovers choice for a getaway. This Medieval village has a skyline of 14 tall towers, visible for miles. Since Fall is harvest, lots of fun activities! During your holiday, join in the grape stomping, savor the local food and wines. There is plenty to do not wine related too: horseback riding, biking, trekking, Italian language, art or photography classes. Or lounge by the pool! Also, a walking tour of San Gimignano is not to be missed. And this 13-century walled town has many cafes. Perfect to relax and sip a glass of wine…or a cappuccino! Although, save some time to see the magnificent frescoes at San Gimignano’s Cathedral. And with many artisan shops selling handmade ceramics, linens and Tuscan specialties, San Gimignano delivers! Make sure to try the local porchetta and world famous gelato champion at Gelateria Dondoli.

Italy is the perfect place to travel with food allergies. As they are a large gluten/celiac area, great for gluten-free! Also, most Italian restaurants know exactly the ingredients in each dish!

Fall is the perfect time to get outside especially in Munich!

Traveling Easily and Inexpensively

To get to San Gimignano, fly into Florence and drive 35 incredibly scenic miles.

Departing London, British Airways has direct flights into Florence, about $126 roundtrip. And only a 2-hour flight.

Traveling from the USA into London has never been as affordable. Because Autumn travel is less in demand, flights from $500 are not uncommon. Besides, you could add a few days in the UK to make this a Tale of Two Cities! And then take a flight from London into Florence.

In San Gimignano, stay at the Hotel Torciano. Their food, wine and hospitality is outstanding! As well as absolutely breath-taking views. Also, they will pick you up in Florence with advance request. And they have an awesome special: only 50 euro per person for an overnight package, including a free wine tasting at Tenuta Torciano.

Or stay in Florence and enjoy this culturally rich city.

Getaways to fall for – Florence, Italy

The city of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is not to be missed! Considering Florence birthed Michelangelo, da Vinci, Dante, Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Giotto, among others…Firenze knows art and architecture. Therefore, a walk around Florence will have you smiling at its beauty. From the magnificent dome of Santa Maria del Fiori (“the Duomo”) to the Ponte Vecchio, Florence enchants. On your walk, stop by the leather school (Scuola del Cuoio) behind the Basilica of Santa Croce. This is the place for authentic Italian leather wallets, belts, purses and gloves. Finish your walk with a scrumptious lunch/dinner in the shadow of the Pitti Palace at the Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina. And stay at an apartment in the historic center, like Chiara’s. Because Florence is truly magical, especially with your own garden! Nearby is the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia, and city center.

Our food allergy restaurant recommendation: Trattoria da Garibardi 🙂

And from Florence you can do a daytrip to San Gimignano.

Family and Friends Travel Fun Photo
So much fun traveling with family and friends, South of France!

Getaways to fall for – Fall travel, South of France

Does the South of France bring to mind rolling hills, markets filled with Autumn goodies, quaint towns and delicious food? Then it is no surprise that this area is on travel lists year-round. But Fall is especially alluring. With a warm, mild climate, the Cote d’Azur area is gorgeous. Perfect for coastal hikes, sandy Mediterranean beaches, art, shopping and of course, eating! French food and wine is world-renown. Stay in the seaside town of Antibes. With inexpensive train travel it’s easy to spend the day in nearby Cannes, Marseille – even Monaco. Or head into the mountains of Provence. With charming towns like Les Baux, Gordes and St. Paul de Vence, it is hard to choose!

And with EasyJet flights from London, from 24 pounds/one way, totally affordable. Stay in an Air B&B – my link usually offers a discount code. So much Fall fun, oui? Our food allergy recommendation in Antibes: Gusto Gelato Pizza

Sun, Sand, Sea – Getaway to the Island of Sardinia

So you are looking for a sunny, seaside holiday? Then plan to fly to the island of Sardinia. Despite having inexpensive flights, Sardinia is relatively unknown. Especially to Americans. In fact, both Ryanair and Easyjet have inexpensive flights in/out of London. While lots of Italians holiday here in Summer, Fall is much less crowded. But still lots to see and do! Due to its Mediterranean location, water sports, hiking, and biking are popular. Even though the Costa Smeralda (“Emerald Coast”) area has mansions and mega-yachts, Sardinia is very affordable. For more details, take a look at Sardinia, Beaches and Beyond. In fact, this article will show you how wonderful Sardinia truly is! Also, food allergy info in the post. 🙂

As flights from London to Sardinia are only about 2.5 hours, can also be a long week-end getaway. Flights from 26 euro one way.

romantic road germany
Always romantic, Germany’s Romantic Road looks like a storybook!

Getaways to fall for – Fall travel, Munich and Bavaria

Although Oktoberfest and Munich are legendary, this Bavarian city is a fantastic Fall vacation. Besides, it’s only a 2 hour flight from London. Therefore you can finish work and quickly enjoy Bavarian dinner. With local Munich beer, of course! Considering my family is from Munich, we visit often. And there is so much to see and do. Obviously, beer gardens. But also the BMW and Deutsche Museums, Nymphenburg Palace, Glockenspiel, walk thru the Englischer Garden and a Mike’s Bike tour. Also, a great daytrip is a hike around Lake Ammersee with gorgeous Fall foliage. Then, stop for lunch at Andech’s Monastery Brewery or Airbrau our food allergy choice! But don’t worry, no drinking and driving! Easy via the S-Bahn to town of Herrsching. Cheers…or as the German’s say, Prost! Recommend Air B&B in Munich’s center.

If your getaway is longer, add in the Romantic Road towns. Especially Rothenburg ob der Tauber and their Night Watchman’s tour.
