Top 9 Allergen-Free Fall Apple Crumb Cake
Fall is in full swing and nothing says Fall like the yummy smell of cinnamon apples baking in the oven.But for people with food allergies, finding a safe dessert isn’t always easy.Especially when many Fall sweets are often loaded with common food allergens like gluten, nuts, dairy, and peanuts.That’s why I am so excited to share this to share this Top 9 Allergen-Free Fall Apple Crumb Cake!
Servings: 6 people
Ingredients
Shortbread Base
- 1 1/2 cups Flour Can be Gluten-Free
- 1/4 tsp Sea Salt
- 3/4 cup Dairy-Free Butter Softened Earth Balance Butter substitute
- 1/4 cup Sugar
Apple Pie Filling
- 2-3 medium Apples - Peeled & Chopped Small organic, Granny Smith or Fuji
- 2 TBSP Flour CAn be Gluten-Free
- 2 TBSP Brown Sugar
- 1 TSP Cinnamon
- 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract
- 1 TBSP Grand Marnier Liquor optional
Crumb Cake Topping
- 1 Cup Flour Can be Gluten-Free
- 1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/3 Cup Cold Earth Balance Butter Substitute or Butter if no allergy
- 1 TSP Cinnamon
- 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract
- 1 TBSP Grand Marnier Liquor Optional
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 325F.
- Spray (check ingredients) or use parchment paper in baking dish.
- To make shortbread base, whisk flour and salt together 1 minute. Set aside.
- In KitchenAid stand mixer, cream butter substitute on medium speed for 2-3 minutes, then add sugar. Mix 1 minute, then add flour, mixing until combined.
- 5. Spread evenly in baking dish and bake for 5 minutes.
- 6. Remove baking dish and set oven temperature to 350F.
Apple Pie Filling
- While shortbread base is baking, mix chopped apples, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, & Grand Marnier together.
- Spoon over shortbread base, spreading evenly.
Crumb Cake Topping
- In a medium bowl, add all ingredients together, making sure to cut in cold butter substitute. Form into crumbs & place gently on top of apple pie filling.
- Bake approximately 30 - 40 minutes until apples are cooked thru.
- Allow to cool slightly and serve as is or add @Oatly food allergy friendly "ice cream"!

Tips for Food Allergy Safe Baking
If you are recently diagnosed with a food allergy or using this recipe for someone with a food allergy, here are some very important tips to keep everyone safe:
- ALWAYS double-check all labels, including sprays for pans (often has soy)
- Take photos of all ingredients & text to person with the food allergies, so that they can make sure the ingredients are safe for them
- Wash hands (careful of soaps that could have nuts/allergens in them), all surfaces and keep food allergens away from your baking/prep area
- No label on a food item like flour? Buy a new bag. This way you know there isn’t any potential for cross contamination
- After Apple Crumb Cake has cooled completely, cover and label with ingredients
